The Black-crowned Night Heron, Nicticorax nicticorax, spends its daytime in trees and fresh water marshes across the US and Mexico, feeding mostly on fish at night. This juvenile was sitting on the inlet gate to an impoundment at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and allowed me to shoot many images as I remained in the car only a few feet away. THis image was among the winning images in the 2008 National Wildlife Refuge Photo Contest.
